Handing over competency standards to the Minister
Tertiary and Vocational Educational Commission together with LIRNEasia launched the National Competency Standards for the solid waste Management sector Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies at the BMICH premises yesterday.

 Prof. D. S. Wijesekara the Chairman, Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission presented the competency standard document to Hon. Minister of Youth Affairs Mr. Dullas Alahapperuma which then was presented by the Minister to the stake holders of the sector, representing Local Authorities solid waste managers, solid waste workers and the private sector. Addressing the gathering Minister Dullas Alahapperuma appreciated the move towards the giving a recognition for the work of solid waste workers. He also mentioned that though the occupation is looked down upon in Sri Lanka there is a high potential for such workers to earn well in other countries. He insisted the media to get the message of new opportunities for youth who are unable to get selected for University Education. 

 

Certificates were awarded by Dr.  A. T. Piyasiri to the assessors in the sector and plaques were awarded to solid waste managers who participated in developing the competency standards. The event was followed by a discussion consisted of a panel representing Waste Management Authority of Western Province, Sri  Lanka Federation of Local Government Authorities, Balangoda Urban council, and the TVEC.  The participants were enthusiastic about the possibilities of getting the NVQs incorporated in to the recruitment schemes and promotion schemes also the gathering appreciated a lot the effort to change the name of the occupation.

Recognizing the developers of competency standards
The event was attended by 52 personnel from 25 local authorities including political representatives from Negombo M. C, Balangoda U. C, Kuliyapitiya U. C, Paathadumbara P. S, Weligama P. S., and Kaduwela   P'S.. In addition, there were representatives from  Commissioner’ office for Local government of Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces, , JICA-Sri Lanka, National Solid Waste Management Support Centre, TVEC , University of Waste Management Authority,.  Also representatives from private sector involved in the field such as Abans environmental services, Burns Environmental services, EML consultants, Aitken Spence were present at this occasion.
