School 3R programme, yet another novel idea of Balangoda Urban council to improve waste disposal practices of its' community completed 4 months recently. The programme has been in operation in five schools in the Balangoda urban council area from December 2009. Since then it has  distributed Rs. 8,000 among schoolchildren for recyclable items removing 4.5 tons of nonbiodegradables from  waste stream.

Specialty of this school programme is that it offers incentives in three ways, of which the students  individually can select the suitable for them. The three ways of  giving incentives are

  1. Buying the recyclables from the students for cash
  2. Point card system which allows students to collect money in a card up to thousand rupees
  3. Providing stationary then and there for the value of the recyclables

To to assess the achivements and identify the failures of the programme alongs its move towards expected outcomes the Urban council organized a progress review meeting on 30th March, 2010. The CLG, Sabaragamuwa province, school Principals and and educational officials were present at this occasion.

It has been observed that the schools guided by enthusiastic  and commited Principals and Teachers have shown a roaring success triggering other schools in the area to get involved in the programme. There has been a considerable change in the behavior of children and some have found new ways of collecting recyclables.

The programme has a long way ahead with six more schools in the area awaiting to join. Thus, the gathering discussed ways to overcome the drawbacks. New recognition scheems are to be introduced to the system in time to come in order to encourage the students and schools .
