SW workers of Talawakele UC and Nuwara Eliya PS
Talawakele_ Lindula Urban Council started preparing their
solid waste workers for level 1 of national vocational qualifications in solid
waste management from Saturday the 4th
August 2010. Workers who have been engaged in SWM will be guided to organize
their knowledge, skills and experience according to competency standards during
the five weekends ahead. In addition to those from Talawakele, five other
workers from Nuwara Eliya Pradeshiya Sabha are also engaged in this preparatory
work. It is encouraging to a see a
female worker too in the group.

Professional development aspect seemed to have been
forgotten in the local authorities. Very few high rankers are sometimes
fortunate to get various kinds of training while the lower rankers
usually do
not get anything.
3R Initiative at LIRNEasia jointly organized a professional
development and motivation programme for personnel involved in solid waste
management of Kaduwela Pradeshiya Sabha at Hotel Samenra, Kaduwela, on 8th
August 2010. There were 144 participants
of various sections linked to solid waste management such as health, accounts and
tax sections. Both Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha attended
the event and the ranks of the officials participated ranged from top
administrative to the contract labourers.

Records of Dengue are rising at an alarming rate and
reaching an epidemic level. Improperly disposed waste materials are an oasis
for dengue mosquitoes. Thus, fight against dengue is largely a fight against
bad waste disposal practices of the community.
Understanding their responsibility at this hour of need,
Lakshapathiya South Aruna Sarvodaya samithi together with Lakshapathiya welfare
society organized campaign a to eliminate dengue mosquito breeding places and
the to introduced a better alternative
of disposing their recyclables.
Kalutara back to composting. Kalutara urban council under the direction of Pilisaru proect of Central Environmental authority is planninig to have a large scale compost project. Waste collected from kaluta Pradeshiya Sabha, Panadura Urban Council and Panadura Pradeshiya Sabha will also be composted under the same project.

Waste heaps along roads and abandoned lands are one of the main culprits for providing breeding places for dengeu mosquitoes. Out breaks of Dengue has opened eyes of many local
authorities to remove waste heaps on road sides . If your local Authority has not
done it yet just report to Lankadeepa (6th page). Pressurize your local authority to be
more responsible.
Do not forget that you also have a responsibility to dispose
your garbage in such a manner that is convenient for the local authority to
manage.
