Handing over the Sampath Piyasas to community groups
Written by chammi
Thursday, 06 May 2010

Condition of the Sampath Piyasas in the Minuwangoda town located in the main roads were not satisfactory few months ago.  Minuwangoda being a hub to Jaela Negombo Katunayake and Veyangoda roads gets a considerable floating population in the town in the day.  People on their way to offices got used to dump their garbage bags in front of the Sampath Piyasa making them popular dump sites. The situation brought the urban council an extra burden on keeping the town clean and tidy.

As a solution now the Sampath Piyasas have been located on inner streets. Responsibility of management of Sampath piyasas have been handed over to the community in the surrounding area.  The situation is much better now. Residents in the area now have a convenient way of disposing their nonbiodegradables. Instead of garbage heaps council collects recyclable items which generate money.

Think- seperating your own waste make my job easier and pleasant
After initiation of source separation programme, waste collectors of Katana pradeshiya  sabha  have understood the value of recyclables. They consider it a privilege to work in waste collection carts and for them having to work in a tractor is a punishment.

Katana pradeshiya sabha possess a huge compost site, which was 100% automated earlier but now functioning  manually.  Organic waste for compost production is collected from the Raddolugama housing scheme.  Garbage collection and source separation procedures have evolved according to this primary factor.

Waste  is collected separately as biodegradables and nonbiodegradables in the Raddolugama  housing scheme. Waste collection is done by carts and  the carts have been provided with large bins for collecting biodegradables. During initiation of the source seperation programme, pradeshiya sabha has distributed green bins to households in a selected part of the scheme to collect food waste. Upon expansion  of the programme residents in other areas have been instructed to give their food waste in separate bags.

Ladies further seperation waste
Badowita is a densely populated area comming under the jurisdiction of Dehiwala Mount Lavinia municipal council.
