TVEC is in the process of finalizing the competency standards for the vocation of solid waste management operational assistant. Meanwhile many local government authorities have shown keen enthusiasm in forming
solid waste training centers and educating their solid waste workers. Preparing curricula for these training centers
will be done by the solid waste managers themselves. Because having their hands
on in SWM they are the best expertise in the sector to train their workers.
To facilitate these emerging center managers and other interested
SW managers 3R initiative at LIRNEasia organized a workshop on curriculum development
on 3rd April 2009 at Nagarodaya. Sixteen solid waste managers from
thirteen local government authorities and a Zonal Manager from WMA (WP) Mr. Rakeeb
participated in this workshop.
It
does not need to mention, how unpleasant life would be to a solid waste worker
who has to collect non biodegradable items inside bags of rotting mixed waste,
as a routine work of his job. Well, nobody deserves to do that or should be
allowed to so. Unfortunately many compassionate and sympathetic citizens of
this country are not sensible on this issue when it comes to their own waste.
Residents’
laziness to separate their waste in to biodegradables and non biodegradables is
a major problem the local governments face in solid waste management. Mixed
waste is difficult to be used in composting and even if used has to do more
sieving during later stages. So the local governments have to deploy servants
to separate this unsorted waste or in other wards site separation which make
their lives disgusting. If the residents can separate their waste at home
itself it will help the local government to make revenue out of the
nonbiodegradables while processing the perishable waste in a more efficient
manner.
