Traditionally
the biogas technology was looked at as a source of energy for the rural
population mainly for lighting, though it possessed several other benefits. There are 5,000
bio gas units over the whole country, though still we can see some of them are
not operating in the presents. Many governmental
and non-governmental organizations have been active in this area at various periods of time. They are
NERD, Practical Action, HELPO-O, Universities, ITI and some of commercial level
individuals and technical experts.
University of Moratuwa is conducting a training programme on
solid waste management for political leaders of local government authorities
today at Sri Lanka Federation Institute. The event coordinated by National Solid Waste Management Support Centre
(NSWMSC) is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agencies (JICA) Sri Lanka
and.Political and administrative leaders
from seventy selected local authorities were supposed to receive training in
this one day training session.

Novelis Inc. recycled some 39 billion aluminum beverage cans in its latest
fiscal year, a company record.
Recycling
reduced the Atlanta aluminum product maker´s need for 530,000 metric tons,
about 580,000 tons, of primary aluminum. It avoided nearly 5 million metric
tons of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the company.
Used beverage
cans account for about half of the aluminum scrap the company processes each
year. Making new aluminum products from recovered material requires 5% of the
energy required by making them from raw materials.
"The
environmental benefit of aluminum recycling is enormous," said Nick
Madden, vice president of global procurement and metal management for Novelis.
