forgotten in the local authorities. Very few high rankers are sometimes
fortunate to get various kinds of training while the lower rankers
usually do
not get anything.

development and motivation programme for personnel involved in solid waste
management of Kaduwela Pradeshiya Sabha at Hotel Samenra, Kaduwela, on 8th
August 2010. There were 144 participants
of various sections linked to solid waste management such as health, accounts and
tax sections. Both Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha attended
the event and the ranks of the officials participated ranged from top
administrative to the contract labourers.

Distributing bags
Records of Dengue are rising at an alarming rate and
reaching an epidemic level. Improperly disposed waste materials are an oasis
for dengue mosquitoes. Thus, fight against dengue is largely a fight against
bad waste disposal practices of the community.
Understanding their responsibility at this hour of need,
Lakshapathiya South Aruna Sarvodaya samithi together with Lakshapathiya welfare
society organized campaign a to eliminate dengue mosquito breeding places and
the to introduced a better alternative
of disposing their recyclables.
Waste heaps along roads and abandoned lands are one of the main culprits for providing breeding places for dengeu mosquitoes. Out breaks of Dengue has opened eyes of many local
authorities to remove waste heaps on road sides . If your local Authority has not
done it yet just report to Lankadeepa (6th page). Pressurize your local authority to be
more responsible.
Do not forget that you also have a responsibility to dispose
your garbage in such a manner that is convenient for the local authority to
manage.

Guidance for Trainees
Balangoda Urban Council conducting
it's fifth training session trained 39 trainee Public Health Inspectors (PHIs)
and Two trainers of National Institute of Health Sciences, Galle on solid waste
management (SWM).
PHIs are one of the different
types of officials who have to take responsibility of managing solid Waste in local
authorities. In addition to dealing with food hygiene and other public health
aspects SWM has earned a considerable attention among responsibilities of a PHI
owing to needs of controlling dengue out breaks and pollution of water sources. Therefore practical training
on proper solid waste management is a vital component. Initiate taken by NIHS, Galle
to incorporate practical solid waste management in to PHI training curriculum
is praiseworthy.
