Some assessors of solid waste management sector
We have already produced standards, curricula, training centers
and trainers for the solid waste management sector. Not limiting our efforts to
above, we now have produced five assessors for the sector to assess the solid
waste workers.
Five assessors received a five-day training from University of Vocational technology
from 14th
-19th June 2010 and are now ready for testing certificate applicants of solid waste management sector for 1st and 2nd levels of National vocational Qualification Systems. Solid waste workers receiving training at a training center
or having adequate prior learning can get themselves assessed by these
assessors
to get certificates of national standards.

Guidance for Trainees
Balangoda Urban Council conducting
it's fifth training session trained 39 trainee Public Health Inspectors (PHIs)
and Two trainers of National Institute of Health Sciences, Galle on solid waste
management (SWM).
PHIs are one of the different
types of officials who have to take responsibility of managing solid Waste in local
authorities. In addition to dealing with food hygiene and other public health
aspects SWM has earned a considerable attention among responsibilities of a PHI
owing to needs of controlling dengue out breaks and pollution of water sources. Therefore practical training
on proper solid waste management is a vital component. Initiate taken by NIHS, Galle
to incorporate practical solid waste management in to PHI training curriculum
is praiseworthy.

Handing over the Sampath Piyasas to community groups
Written by chammi
Thursday, 06 May 2010
Condition of the Sampath Piyasas in the Minuwangoda town located
in the main roads were not satisfactory few months ago. Minuwangoda being a hub to Jaela Negombo
Katunayake and Veyangoda roads gets a considerable floating population in the
town in the day. People on their way to
offices got used to dump their garbage bags in front of the Sampath Piyasa
making them popular dump sites. The situation brought the urban council an
extra burden on keeping the town clean and tidy.
As a solution now the
Sampath Piyasas have been located on inner streets. Responsibility of
management of Sampath piyasas have been handed over to the community in the
surrounding area. The situation is much
better now. Residents in the area now have a convenient way of disposing their
nonbiodegradables. Instead of garbage heaps council collects recyclable items which
generate money.
